Summer Job Opportunities

Posted below are our two, full-time summer 2024 job opportunities:


Summer Position: Museum Interpreter, Waverley Heritage Museum, Waverley, NS

The Waverley Heritage Society is seeking to fill a summer position to support its village museum operations. The Museum Interpreter will welcome visitors to the museum, give tours of the historic collection, handle communications, increase community interest in the museum and bring people together. The Interpreter will provide support and collaborate with volunteers. Training will be provided by members of the Waverley Heritage Society and direction and support will be provided by the museum’s Operations Committee and the Museum Coordinator.

The position is 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with some flexibility for weekend & evening events.

Qualifications:

  • An interest in history.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Leadership experience and the ability to work independently, alone at times and as part of the team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • Reliable transportation to the museum, as there is no available public transit.

The Museum Interpreter, under the direction of the museum’s Operations Committee and the Museum Coordinator, will gain knowledge and experience in the following areas of responsibility:

  • Welcoming and interacting with visitors.
  • Guiding tours of the museum.
  • The creation of social media posts to increase interest in the museum.
  • Planning, participating, and engaging the community in programs and special events, on and off site.
  • Public speaking
  • Collections management (photography, documentation, artifact care and preservation).
  • Public history research and dissemination of information through multiple mediums (exhibits, videos).
  • Museum safety and security
  • General housekeeping.

For the position to qualify for government funding, applicants must have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada. Applicants must be between the ages of 15-30 at the start of employment. They must meet Canadian citizenship criteria, including permanent resident or protected refugee status.

The work term is 8 weeks at $15.70/hour with an approximate start date July 2.

The Waverley Heritage Society is seeking to fill a summer position to support its village museum operations. The Museum Coordinator will welcome visitors to the museum, give tours of the historic collection, handle communications, increase community interest in the museum, bring people together and supervise the Museum Interpreter. The Coordinator will provide support and collaborate with volunteers. Training will be provided by members of the Waverley Heritage Society and direction and support will be provided by the museum’s Operations Committee.

The position is 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with some flexibility for weekend & evening events.

  • Experience supervising employees or leading teams is a necessity.
  • An interest in history.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • The ability to work independently, alone at times and as part of the team.

  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • Reliable transportation to the museum, as there is no available public transit.

Under the direction of the museum’s Operations Committee, the Museum Coordinator will gain knowledge and experience in the following areas of responsibility:

  • Guiding tours of the museum.
  • Managing social media to increase interest in the museum.
  • Planning, participating, and engaging the community in programs and special events, on and off site.

  • Collections management (photography, documentation, artifact care and preservation).
  • Public history research and dissemination of information through multiple mediums (exhibits, videos).
  • Museum safety and security
  • General housekeeping.

For the position to qualify for government funding, the applicant must have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada. Applicants must be enrolled in a full time program for the coming fall term at an accredited post-secondary institution and must have resided in Nova Scotia for at least six months prior to the work term.

The Coordinator position is a 14 week work term at $16.20/hour with an approximate start date of May 27.
